The Schumann Quartett is a German string quartet founded in Cologne in 2007 by three brothers—Erik and Ken Schumann on violin, and Mark Schumann on cello—joined by a violist, currently Veit Hertenstein. Despite their name, the group is not connected to the composer Robert Schumann but is named after the Schumann brothers themselves. Known for their fresh and expressive interpretations, they have trained with distinguished mentors including the Alban Berg Quartet and Günter Pichler. The ensemble enjoys an active international career, performing in major venues like Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, London's Wigmore Hall, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in New York.
The Schumann Quartett's discography is diverse and acclaimed, featuring albums ranging from classical staples such as Mendelssohn and Schubert to modern explorations like their album “1923 – 100 Years of Radio,” which includes works by Hindemith, Berg, Schulhoff, and Janáček. Their albums have received notable awards including the Opus Klassik and BBC Music Magazine Newcomer Award. The quartet is celebrated for the interplay of individual personalities melding into a unified musical expression and is recognized for bringing both experimentation and emotional depth to their performances and recordings.
