Steve Johns is a veteran jazz drummer who has been a prominent figure on the New York jazz scene for over three decades. Born in Boston in 1960, Johns began playing drums at age nine and was influenced by his musical family, particularly his uncle, saxophonist Jimmy Tyler. After studying with renowned drum teacher Alan Dawson and attending the New England Conservatory of Music, Johns moved to New York in 1982 to pursue his jazz career.
Throughout his career, Johns has collaborated with numerous jazz luminaries, including Nat Adderley, Stanley Turrentine, Larry Coryell, Randy Brecker, and Sonny Fortune. He's also been a member of notable ensembles such as the Count Basie Orchestra and the Gil Evans Orchestra. Johns has released albums as a leader, including "No Saints No Sinners" and "Family," the latter featuring his wife, saxophonist Debbie Keefe Johns, and their son, bassist Daryl Johns. In addition to his work as a performer, Johns is also active as a jazz educator.
