Nils-Aslak Valkeapää

Nils-Aslak Valkeapää was a pioneering Sámi musician, poet, and artist known for his contributions to the preservation and modernization of yoik, the traditional vocal music of the Sámi people. Born in 1943 in Finland, Valkeapää was a cultural icon who worked across multiple art forms, including literature and visual arts, to express Sámi identity and heritage. His music blended traditional yoik with ambient and contemporary sounds, creating a unique and atmospheric style that resonated with audiences beyond the Arctic region. His album *Beaivi, Áhčážan (The Sun, My Father)* won the Nordic Council Literature Prize in 1991, highlighting his impact not just in music but also in literature. Throughout his career, he was a strong advocate for Indigenous rights and Sámi culture, leaving behind a rich artistic legacy when he passed away in 2001.
