Aliya Rasheed is a remarkable Pakistani Dhrupad singer known for her captivating voice and perseverance. Born visually impaired, she has honed her skills to compensate for her lack of sight with exceptional hearing, which has greatly aided her musical journey. Rasheed began her music education at the Sanjan Nagar Institute of Philosophy and Arts in Lahore under the guidance of musicologist Raza Kazim. Her big break came when she was sponsored by Kazim to study under Dhrupad Maestros Umakant and Ramakant Gundecha at the Dhrupad Institute in Bhopal, India, for four years starting in 2001. This experience not only equipped her with mastering the Dagar gharana but also made her Pakistan's first female Dhrupad singer.
Aliya Rasheed currently teaches music at the National College of Arts in Lahore and the Sanjan Nagar Trust School. She is working on blending Sufi poetry with Dhrupad styles, continuously pushing the boundaries of traditional music. Her performances are highly acclaimed, and she continues to inspire audiences with her unique talent and dedication to classical music. Rasheed's journey highlights her determination and passion, showing that music truly transcends physical limitations.
