Mattias Svensson

**Mattias Svensson** is a Swedish bassist and composer born in Landskrona in 1967, still calling Sweden home while gigging worldwide. He kicked off his studies in Malmö, then headed to New York's New School in the early '90s for two years, learning from jazz legends like Gary Peacock, Eddie Gomez, and Reggie Workman, plus joining Betty Carter's first Jazz Ahead program—he's been a pro since 1994, touring and recording with big names like Johnny Griffin, Toots Thielemans, Clark Terry, Lee Konitz, Nils Landgren, and Ulf Wakenius.

A key player in the **Jan Lundgren Trio** and Viktoria Tolstoy Band, plus GeJoMa with Georg Wadenius, he dropped his debut leader album *Head Up High* in 2009 with Bill Mays and Joe La Barbera, followed by *Embrace* in 2026 alongside Mays and Morten Lund—his recent releases like *Cheddar*, *Shagit*, *Saleya*, and *Define Me* showcase that warm tone, rhythmic swing, and smart composing that's made him one of Europe's top bassists.
