Marshall Allen's Ghost Horizons

Marshall Allen’s Ghost Horizons is a dynamic, ever-evolving musical project anchored by jazz legend Marshall Allen, best known for his decades-long leadership of the Sun Ra Arkestra. At the heart of the group is Allen himself, who at age 100 and counting, continues to push boundaries on alto saxophone and electronic instruments like the EVI, alongside longtime Arkestra guitarist DM Hotep. Ghost Horizons started as a way to keep Allen busy after he could no longer tour internationally, but quickly grew into a celebrated live series in Philadelphia, with a rotating cast of top-tier musicians from jazz and beyond—including bassists William Parker and Eric Revis, saxophonists James Brandon Lewis and Immanuel Wilkins, and drummers like Chad Taylor.

Recorded over multiple shows at Philadelphia’s Solar Myth venue through Ars Nova Workshop, the project’s double album, *Marshall Allen’s Ghost Horizons: Live in Philadelphia*, compiles standout performances such as “Square the Circle,” “Space Ghost,” and “Warn Them.” The band’s sound is exploratory and vibrant, blending avant-garde jazz, cosmic improvisation, and spontaneous group energy. Far from just a footnote in the legacy of Sun Ra, Ghost Horizons showcases Allen’s singular voice and restless creativity, proving that even a century into his musical journey, he remains a vital force in the world of improvisational music.
