Sir Colin Davis

Sir Colin Davis was one of the most eminent and influential British conductors of his generation. Born on September 25, 1927, in Weybridge, Surrey, Davis studied clarinet at the Royal College of Music in London before moving onto conducting. He rose to prominence in the 1950s and became particularly associated with the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), first conducting it in 1959 and later serving as its principal conductor from 1995 to 2006 and then president until his death in 2013.

Sir Colin's repertoire was vast and diverse, but he was especially renowned for his interpretations of Mozart, Sibelius, and Berlioz. His recordings with the LSO and other leading orchestras garnered international acclaim, as evident in a plethora of albums, including his acclaimed renditions of Elgar's Symphony No. 1, Beethoven's works (as showcased in the "Colin Davis - Beethoven Odyssey" and "Beethoven 250 Fidelio Overture, Symphony No.7, the Creatures of Prometheus"), and Berlioz's "Symphonie Fantastique". His skills were not only in symphonic works but also in opera and choral pieces, like the grand "Te Deum". Sir Colin's commitment to excellence in music was paired with his nurturing approach to young musicians, influencing generations of performers. Knighted in 1980, his passing on April 14, 2013, marked the end of an era for British classical music, but his legacy lives on through his extensive discography and the many musicians he inspired.
