Jerry Butler

Jerry Butler, also known as "The Ice Man" for his cool delivery and smooth baritone voice, is an American soul singer and songwriter. Born on December 8, 1939, in Sunflower, Mississippi, Butler moved to Chicago with his family during his childhood. He originally garnered fame as one of the founding members of the legendary R&B group The Impressions alongside Curtis Mayfield in the late 1950s. Their collaboration yielded the hit "For Your Precious Love," which remains one of the era's most enduring classics.

Seeking to explore a solo career, Butler left The Impressions and scored several hits through the 1960s and 1970s. His velvet voice rendered him a consistent chart presence with songs such as "He Will Break Your Heart," "Moon River," and "Only the Strong Survive." Renowned for his ability to convey deep emotions, Butler's work has been characterized by its impressive range, from upbeat tempo tunes to heartfelt ballads. His later efforts include the soulful collection "Songs of Love & Romance" and "Melinda (Original Score)," showcasing his continued prowess in writing and performing. Throughout his enduring career, Jerry Butler has also been recognized for his live performances, including the captivating "Where Are You Going? (Live On The Ed Sullivan Show, February 28, 1971)," maintaining his stature as a stalwart figure in the world of soul music.
