Alex Zhang Hungtai is a Taiwanese-Canadian musician and multidisciplinary artist best known for his experimental approach to music and sound. He first gained wider recognition under the moniker Dirty Beaches, a project that blended lo-fi rockabilly, minimalism, and atmospheric soundscapes. After retiring Dirty Beaches in 2014, Hungtai shifted his focus toward instrumental, jazz-influenced, and improvisational compositions, working under his own name and occasionally in collaboration with other experimental artists.
Hungtai’s later work embraces a more meditative and cinematic style, which can be heard in his contributions to film soundtracks like August at Akiko’s and I Was a Simple Man. His releases often blend ambient textures, saxophone improvisations, and field recordings, reflecting his deep interest in memory, identity, and place. Whether he's making music for films or releasing personal explorations like Divine Weight and STYX, Hungtai continues to push musical boundaries in thoughtful, deeply evocative ways.
