Desultory is a Swedish death metal band renowned for their pioneering contribution to the melodic death metal movement that surged through Sweden in the early 1990s. Originating from Stockholm, Desultory was formed in 1989 by guitarist Stefan Pöge, bassist Thomas Johnson, and drummer Håkan Morberg, with vocalist Klas Morberg joining shortly thereafter. They infused the burgeoning death metal soundscape with their own blend of melody and aggression, leading to a string of influential early recordings.
Procuring a deal with Metal Blade Records, Desultory's debut studio album "Into Eternity" (1993) and its follow-up "Bitterness" (1994) swiftly established the band as an integral part of Sweden's extreme metal scene. Their music was characterized by its melodic guitar lines, atmospheric solos, and heartfelt growls. The band's initial run saw a stylistic shift with their third album, "Swallow the Snake" (1996), which veered towards a more groove-oriented sound, but it wasn't as positively received as their earlier work. After a hiatus, Desultory returned to their roots with "Counting Our Scars" (2010), which was a testament to their grown-up songwriting skills blended with a return to the early Stockholm death metal sound. "Let's Fly," a single from their last full-length album "Through Aching Aeons" (2016), exemplified the band's capacity for relentless riffing and melodic sensibility, still resonating with fans of the genre. Although the band announced their breakup in 2017, their legacy within the death metal community remains profound, with a discography that stands as a testament to their innovation and artistry.
