Artur Avanesov

Artur Avanesov is an Armenian composer and pianist born in Moscow in 1980. He spent his early years studying music in Baku, Kapan, and Yerevan before formally pursuing piano and composition at the Yerevan State Conservatory from 1997 to 2002, where he also completed his postgraduate studies and earned a Doctor of Arts in 2005 for his research on Zen Buddhism and 20th-century music. Avanesov is recognized for his dynamic involvement in contemporary music, both as a performer and a composer—his works, which include chamber, choral, vocal, and piano pieces, have been performed widely across Europe and beyond.

Avanesov has collaborated with major artists such as Pierre Boulez, Krzystof Penderecki, Kim Kashkashian, and Tigran Mansurian, and has contributed to the founding of several Armenian and international contemporary music ensembles. He has released recordings with notable labels like Deutsche Grammophon and Brilliant Classics. In addition to his creative work, Avanesov is also a respected musicologist and educator, currently serving as a professor at the American University of Armenia and having previously led the Department of Musical Composition at the Yerevan State Conservatory.
