Paul Carroll is a British composer and musician born in East London in 1955. He began his musical journey studying piano and bassoon at the Newham Academy of Music, later joining the Newham Academy Youth Orchestra as a teenager—an experience that gave him his first opportunities to perform his own compositions, including under the baton of the renowned Sir Adrian Boult. After school, Carroll furthered his studies at the Royal College of Music with Geoff Gambold (bassoon) and Phillip Cannon (composition). Carroll’s career reached a significant milestone when he was appointed Commonwealth Music Composer in Residence for ten years, composing works for major royal anniversaries and events throughout the Commonwealth. Notably, during the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 2012, Carroll conducted Commonwealth Orchestras and Choirs before Her Majesty on fifteen occasions and was later invited to conduct the Commonwealth Orchestra and Children’s Choir for the Queen’s Christmas Message in 2017.
Carroll’s catalog includes a wide range of compositions such as the Commonwealth Anthem, Windsor Suite, Cassation No.1 for Orchestra, and Scottish-inspired works like The Castle of Mey, reflecting both his classical training and his deep connection to ceremonial and orchestral music. His music has become synonymous with significant national and international celebrations, showcasing his talent for blending tradition with vibrant new musical ideas.
