Ernestine Schumann-Heink was an Austrian-American contralto known for her rich, expressive voice and incredible career spanning the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in 1861 in what is now the Czech Republic, she gained fame for her performances in Wagnerian opera and German lieder. Her deep, resonant timbre made her a favorite on both the European and American opera circuits. Later in life, she became a beloved recording artist and even performed for troops during World War I. Schumann-Heink's warm, emotive singing and dedication to her craft cemented her legacy as one of the great contraltos of her time.
