Meirelles E Os Copa 5

Meirelles e Os Copa 5 were an influential Brazilian jazz ensemble that gained prominence during the 1960s. Led by saxophonist and flautist J.T. Meirelles, who was a prominent figure in the Bossa Nova movement, the group played a crucial role in the development of samba jazz, also referred to as jazz samba. The ensemble, named after the Copacabana area of Rio de Janeiro and often comprising five members, was known for its sophisticated blend of jazz harmonies with the rhythms of samba, thereby creating a unique and vibrant sound that captured the dynamic spirit of Brazil during that era.

Their album "O Som" (The Sound) marked a significant milestone in Brazilian music, showcasing their ability to fuse traditional Brazilian rhythms with contemporary jazz influences, while "O Nôvo Som" (The New Sound) further established their reputation for innovative arrangements and outstanding musicianship. "Esquema Novo" (New Scheme) and "Samba Jazz !!" continued to push the boundaries of genre, solidifying Meirelles e Os Copa 5's legacy as pioneers within the world of Brazilian music. Although the group disbanded in the late 1960s, their contributions to the evolution of Brazilian music remain influential, and they are revered as one of the quintessential ensembles that bridged the gap between jazz and samba.
