Jos Van Der Kooy

Jos van der Kooy is a Dutch organist, improviser, and educator who’s been a cornerstone of the organ scene for decades. Born in Rotterdam in 1951, he studied under Piet Kee at the Amsterdam Conservatory, winning the Prix d’Excellence in 1981. He’s held iconic roles like organist at Amsterdam’s Westerkerk (1981–2019) and Haarlem’s Grote of St. Bavo Kerk, where he presided over the legendary Müller organ. A champion of new music, he’s recorded works by Dutch composers like Wim de Ruiter and Piet Kee, including the album *New Music For The Müller Organ in Haarlem*. When he’s not performing, he teaches at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague and has mentored generations of organists through masterclasses and festivals.

His legacy includes competitive wins like the 1977 St. Albans International Organ Festival prize and France’s Société Académique Arts-Sciences-Lettres medals. Though recent releases like *Manneke: Pneoo* and *Mendelssohn-Bartholdy: Six Sonatas* aren’t detailed in available sources, his discography consistently highlights improvisational flair and deep engagement with both classical and contemporary repertoire.
