Gong Gong Gong 工工工
Gong Gong Gong 工工工 is a Beijing-based duo made up of guitarist Tom Ng and bassist Joshua Frank, known for their raw, minimal sound that fuses elements of blues, psych rock, and punk with a rhythmic sensibility inspired by Chinese folk traditions. The band strips their setup down to just guitar and bass—no drums or percussion—and yet creates a hypnotic, driving energy through repetition and groove, a style they call "phantom rhythm."
Ng sings in Cantonese while Frank handles the bass in a percussive, melodic way that propels the songs forward. Their debut album, Phantom Rhythm (幽靈節奏), released via Wharf Cat Records in 2019, showcases their distinctive sound, and has since been followed up by remix projects featuring collaborators like Yu Su and Howie Lee. Gong Gong Gong’s music feels both timeless and modern, rooted in tradition but full of a restless DIY spirit.
