The HU

The HU is a Mongolian band that has gained international acclaim for combining traditional Mongolian musical elements with the ferocity of heavy metal, creating a distinctive genre often referred to as "hunnu rock," a play on the Hunnu, an ancient Mongolian empire also known as the Huns in western culture. Founded in 2016, the group consists of Gala, Jaya, Temka, and Enkush, who play traditional instruments such as the morin khuur (horsehead fiddle), tovshuur (Mongolian guitar), and tumur khuur (jaw harp), alongside the standard rock lineup. Their throat singing, a style indigenous to their homeland, sets them apart, offering an otherworldly element to their sound.

The HU released their debut album "The Gereg" in 2019 to global fanfare, making a name for themselves as cultural ambassadors of Mongolian traditions. They followed up with the deluxe edition that featured new collaborations. Their subsequent releases have seen them daringly merge their sound with other music traditions and artists. Notable among these collaborations is "Black Thunder," featuring Serj Tankian of System of a Down, and "This Is Mongol (Warrior Souls)" with William DuVall of Alice In Chains. Their music has not only earned them a passionate fanbase across the world but has also led to their involvement with multimedia projects, such as "Sugaan Essena," an original track for the video game "Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order." With "Rumble of Thunder," their latest effort, The HU continues to meld fierce rock with the majestic storytelling and cultural richness of their native Mongolia, both honoring their heritage and reshaping the global metal landscape.
