Karen Khachaturian

Karen Khachaturian was a Russian composer known for his vibrant, rhythmic works that often blend classical structure with lively, characterful melodies. Born in 1920, he was the nephew of the famous composer Aram Khachaturian and came into his own through a distinctive musical voice, often marked by energy, color, and humor. One of his most popular works is the ballet "Cipollino," based on the fairy tale by Gianni Rodari, which became especially beloved in Soviet-era children's theater.

Khachaturian taught at the Moscow Conservatory and was a mentor to a number of students who would go on to make their own marks in contemporary classical music. His chamber and orchestral works, including his violin and piano sonatas, continue to be performed and recorded, appealing to listeners with their balance of lyricism and striking rhythmic vitality.
