Jeannette Sorrell is an acclaimed conductor and harpsichordist, renowned for her impassioned performances of Baroque and Classical music. As the founder and artistic director of Apollo's Fire, the Cleveland Baroque Orchestra, Sorrell has built a reputation for invigorating interpretations that blend historical scholarship with creative storytelling. Born into a musical family, with a cellist father and a pianist mother, she was gifted in music from an early age and went on to study conducting at the Tanglewood Music Center and Oberlin Conservatory, before further honing her skills under the tutelage of Leonard Bernstein and Gustav Meier.
Sorrell launched Apollo's Fire in 1992, quickly establishing the ensemble as a force in the early music movement. Under her direction, the group has earned accolades for its vibrant performances and recordings, which exude both precision and soul. Some of their most recent releases include a dramatic rendition of Handel's "Israel in Egypt," which captures the epic scale of the biblical tale, and a contemplative exploration of Bach with "Heavenly Bach - Arias & Cantatas of J.S. Bach." Sorrell has also led Apollo's Fire in spirited performances of Vivaldi's evergreen "The Four Seasons," and ventured into the evocative sounds of Iberian and Sephardic music with "Sephardic Journey." Her imaginative approach to programming and dedication to bringing baroque music to life for modern audiences has cemented her position as one of the preeminent interpreters of early music on the international stage.
