Type O Negative

Type O Negative was an American gothic metal band formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 1989. Fronted by the unmistakable baritone of the late Peter Steele, the band also included keyboardist Josh Silver, guitarist Kenny Hickey, and drummer Sal Abruscato (later replaced by Johnny Kelly). They gained a following with their dark, moody blend of heavy metal, doom metal, and gothic rock, often touching on themes of romance, depression, and death. Their music was characterized by long, intricate compositions, melodic bass lines, and a merging of both harsh and melodic vocal phases.

Type O Negative's breakthrough arrived with the 1993 album "Bloody Kisses", which included hits like "Black No. 1" and "Christian Woman". This success marked them as a prominent band in the 1990s alternative metal scene. They continued to build upon their distinct sound with subsequent releases such as "October Rust" in 1996, which showcased a more polished and atmospheric direction that yielded fan favorites "Love You to Death" and "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend". Despite dealing with heavy themes, the band was also known for their sardonic humor and self-deprecating wit, often reflected in their music, interviews, and live performances. Following the unfortunate passing of Peter Steele in 2010, Type O Negative disbanded, leaving a legacy as darkly romantic icons within the heavy music subculture. Their influence can still be felt today in the realm of gothic and doom metal bands who cite them as a pivotal inspiration.
