Lontano

Lontano is a renowned London-based contemporary music ensemble founded in 1976 by conductor and composer Odaline de la Martinez along with flautist Ingrid Culliford. The group is known for championing 20th and 21st century music, with a special focus on works by contemporary British and American composers, women composers, and Latin American classical repertoire. Over the decades, Lontano has built an international reputation for being one of the most exciting and versatile exponents in new music performance, covering contemporary opera, music theatre, concerts, workshops, broadcasts, and tours. They actively commission, produce, perform, and record cutting-edge compositions, regularly working with some of the most inventive and radical composers of our time.

Lontano also has a strong commitment to education and community outreach, working with diverse groups to promote new music. They have a close relationship with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), with their conductor Odaline de la Martinez notably becoming the first woman to conduct a full evening at the BBC Proms in 1984. Since 2002, Lontano has been ensemble-in-residence at King’s College London, where they collaborate with young composers and nurture new talent through rehearsals and professional performances. The ensemble also runs its own record label, LORELT, dedicated to recording important but often neglected repertoire, including many works by women and Latin American composers.
