Phillip Fraser is a respected roots reggae artist originally from the Greenwich Farm area of Kingston, Jamaica, though he was officially born in Whitfield Town. Deeply influenced by the Rastafari movement and the late reggae icon Slim Smith, Fraser became a key figure in the roots reggae scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s. He’s best known for his work with the Freedom Sounds and Roots Tradition labels, recording classic tracks like “Come Ethiopians,” “Mr. Wicked Man,” and “You’re No Good.” Over a career spanning several decades, Fraser’s gentle yet powerful voice and commitment to cultural and love-themed lyrics have made him a beloved veteran in reggae, both in Jamaica and internationally.
Even as many of his peers moved abroad, Fraser chose to stay in Kingston, later recording under his own Razor Sound label and continuing to release music for over 45 years. Some of his most recent releases, including “Children of God (Dubwise Version),” “World Inna Mess Riddim,” “Come Ethiopians (Deluxe Edition),” and “Freedom Sounds In Dub!,” showcase his enduring presence and adaptability in the reggae scene, blending classic roots vibes with fresh dub and modern rhythms.
