Michael Houstoun is one of New Zealand’s most celebrated classical pianists, known for his masterful interpretations of composers like Beethoven, Brahms, and Bach. A child prodigy, Houstoun gained national recognition early in his life and went on to study internationally, including under the renowned pedagogue Rudolf Serkin. Over his distinguished career, he's become especially acclaimed for his complete cycles of Beethoven's piano sonatas, which he has performed and recorded multiple times.
Houstoun’s playing is characterized by intellectual rigor, emotional depth, and a clear, expressive tone. In addition to his solo work, he frequently collaborates with other top-tier musicians and has contributed significantly to New Zealand’s classical music scene. Houstoun stepped back from international touring to focus more on performance and artistic life in New Zealand, and he's also been involved in arts advocacy and education. His discography includes a wide range of repertoire, from romantic intermezzi to contemporary New Zealand composers.
