Pandit Sharda Sahai

Pandit Sharda Sahai was a renowned tabla maestro and one of the leading exponents of the Benares gharana, a prominent school of tabla playing known for its powerful and intricate style. Born in Varanasi (also known as Benares) in 1935, he came from a distinguished family of musicians and began his training at a very young age under the guidance of his grandfather, Pandit Ram Sahai, the founder of the Benares style. Over the decades, Pandit Sharda Sahai became celebrated for his deep mastery of rhythm, breathtaking improvisations, and dedication to upholding and sharing the rich traditions of his gharana.

Throughout his career, he performed at prestigious venues around the world, collaborating with many leading artists across Indian classical and Western traditions.
