Stomu Takeishi

Stomu Takeishi is a renowned Japanese experimental and jazz bassist, born in 1964 in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture. He is celebrated for his innovative performances, often using a fretless five-string electric bass guitar and a Klein five-string acoustic bass guitar. Takeishi's musical journey began as a koto player, but he shifted to bass after moving to the United States in 1983 to attend the Berklee College of Music. He continued his studies at The New School in Manhattan. Takeishi has gained prominence as a versatile bassist in New York's jazz scene, collaborating with notable musicians such as Don Cherry, Henry Threadgill, Bill Frisell, and Wynton Marsalis. He has also performed with groups like Myra Melford's Crush Trio and Erik Friedlander's Topaz, showcasing his ability to blend into diverse musical settings.

In recent years, Takeishi has been involved in several projects, including the release of the EP "Outline Soul Searching" in collaboration with Maria Winther and Brandon Ross. His earlier work includes "Revealing Essence," a project with Brandon Ross. Takeishi's contributions to jazz are marked by his experimental approach and his ability to adapt to various musical environments, making him a respected figure in contemporary jazz.
