Monica Ohuchi

Monica Ohuchi is a powerhouse pianist whose “commanding pianism” (per The New York Times) has earned her a reputation as both a dazzling soloist and a passionate chamber musician across the U.S., Canada, Japan, and Europe. From her orchestral debut at age ten with the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra to recent performances with groups like the Colorado Symphony and the New Millennium Symphony Orchestra of Gijon, Spain, she’s known for her expressive, technically assured playing that brings both clarity and warmth to the stage. Her collaborations stretch from classical favorites to boundary-pushing contemporary works, and she’s a familiar voice on All-Classical Portland radio and at top venues like Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall.

Based in Portland, Monica is the Executive Director of Fear No Music, where she champions new music alongside her husband, composer Kenji Bunch—who also wrote her solo album Monica’s Notebook, a collection of études crafted just for her. When she’s not performing, Monica is a dedicated educator, teaching at Reed College and serving as a frequent guest clinician and competition adjudicator. Her recent releases include the album Paganini: Capriccio (with violinist Tomás Cotik), A Spark and a Glimmer (a chamber work with Caitlin Edwards and Nancy Ives), and her own Monica’s Notebook. Whether on stage, in the studio, or in the classroom, Monica Ohuchi brings infectious energy and deep musical insight to everything she does.
