Humberto Quagliata

Humberto Quagliata was a renowned Uruguayan pianist born on July 16, 1955, in Montevideo. He spent much of his life in Spain, where he became particularly associated with Spanish music, especially the works of Federico Mompou and other contemporary composers. Quagliata began his musical journey at a young age, first performing on television at ten years old. He went on to win the Primer Premio in the Concurso de Juventudes Musicales at seventeen and later earned his title of Magisterio de Piano. Notable performances included concerts at prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall in New York and Teatro Real in Madrid. In 1995, he was awarded the Cruz de Caballero de la Orden del Mérito Civil by King Juan Carlos for his contributions to the dissemination of contemporary Spanish music.

Quagliata's discography includes albums like *Piano Español Contemporaneo*, *Manuel Balboa - Obra Integral para Piano*, and *Delfín Colomé Obras para Piano*. His career spanned over 2,000 concerts worldwide, cementing his legacy as a master of Spanish contemporary music. He passed away on May 27, 2017, in Alicante, Spain. Quagliata's influence also extended to his students, including notable pianists such as José María Duque and Mario Prisuelos. His legacy continues to inspire musicians and music competitions, such as the International Piano Competition held in his memory.
