Dr. Michael White is a renowned jazz clarinetist and a prominent figure in the New Orleans music scene. As both an educator and musician, Dr. White has dedicated his life to preserving and advancing the unique musical culture of his hometown.
Born on November 29, 1954, in New Orleans, White was immersed in the city's rich musical heritage from a young age. He was professionally playing in the French Quarter by his teen years. Aside from his performance career, Dr. White is also a respected historian and, since 1981, a jazz studies professor at Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans. In his extensive discography, some of the most recent contributions include "Tricentennial Rag," marking the 300-year anniversary of New Orleans with a collection of original and historic compositions, and "Adventures in New Orleans Jazz Parts 1 & 2," which showcase his versatility by blending traditional jazz with an array of other music genres. Dr. White’s music not only celebrates the rich history of New Orleans jazz but equally pushes the boundaries, seeking new horizons for the traditional sound. His talent has been acknowledged with numerous accolades, including the National Endowment for the Arts’ NEA Jazz Masters award in 2008. Dr. Michael White continues to be a key ambassador of the spirit and evolution of New Orleans jazz.
