Starship is an American rock band that found its footing in the mid-1980s, emerging from the ashes of the iconic group Jefferson Airplane and its successor, Jefferson Starship. The genesis of Starship was marked by considerable change, as key Jefferson Starship members departed, leading vocalist Grace Slick and guitarist Paul Kantner to reform the band under this new, succinct moniker. Starship's sound retained the mainstream appeal and rock sensibilities of Jefferson Starship but leaned more towards the pop-rock and arena rock genres that were prevalent in the 1980s.
Releasing their debut album "Knee Deep in the Hoopla" in 1985, Starship immediately soared to commercial success with the hit singles "We Built This City" and "Sara," which both claimed top spots on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The band's trajectory continued with the albums "No Protection" in 1987, which featured the number-one hit "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now," and "Love Among The Cannibals" in 1989, showcasing their ability to adapt and thrive in the ever-changing musical landscape. Despite lineup changes and the ebb and flow of the music industry, Starship has maintained its legacy through touring and continues to resonate with both long-time fans and new listeners, as evidenced by their more recent releases like "We Dream In Color" and the single "My Woman."
