Trio Accanto is a distinguished ensemble that has carved a niche for itself in contemporary classical music through its innovative performances and dedication to the avant-garde. Comprising saxophonist Marcus Weiss, pianist Nicolas Hodges, and percussionist Christian Dierstein, the trio was founded in 1994 with the aim of expanding the saxophone-piano-percussion repertoire. Since its inception, Trio Accanto has worked closely with composers from around the world, commissioning and premiering numerous new works that challenge and enrich the concert music tradition.
The group is renowned for its interpretative mastery and its boundary-pushing programming, blending the novel and the known in a way that appeals to both new music aficionados and wider audiences. Their most recent releases showcase their versatility and commitment to contemporary music, including "Christian Wolff: Trio IX and Exercises," which features the minimalist and experimental works of Christian Wolff, and "Other Stories," a collection that emphasizes the trio's narrative approach to music-making. With "So near so far," Trio Accanto offers a thoughtful meditation on distance and closeness through sound, while "Music for clarinet, viola and piano" demonstrates their adeptness at adapting to varied chamber formats. Their continued collaboration with living composers across different projects, such as "Mark Andre: Chamber Works," highlights the importance they place on continued evolution and contribution to the contemporary music scene.
