Thomas Tellefsen

Thomas Tellefsen was a 19th-century Norwegian pianist and composer, born in 1823 in Trondheim. A student of the legendary Frédéric Chopin, Tellefsen carried his teacher’s Romantic style into his own works, blending it with elements of Norwegian folk music. After Chopin’s death, Tellefsen worked to preserve and promote his mentor’s legacy while also establishing his own career as a concert pianist and composer in Paris. His music includes two piano concertos, various chamber works, and a substantial body of solo piano music that’s lyrical, elegant, and often virtuosic.

Though not widely known today, Tellefsen’s contributions are enjoying a revival, especially through recordings that explore his complete piano works and concertos. His unique position as both a Norwegian nationalist composer and a Parisian Romantic stylist gives his music a distinct voice, making him a fascinating figure in 19th-century European classical music.
