Jones began his career in a rock and roll band but was influenced by Eric Dolphy and Ornette Coleman, which guided him toward free jazz. He worked with notable musicians such as Frank Wright, Sunny Murray, and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Notable recordings include his work on albums like *Your Prayer* with Frank Wright and *Africanasia* with the Art Ensemble of Chicago. His solo work includes the album *Scorpio*. Jones passed away in 1998 in New York City.
