Voivod is a pioneering Canadian heavy metal band hailing from Jonquière, Quebec, formed in 1982. Their distinctive sound is an eclectic mix of thrash metal, progressive rock, and punk with a touch of sci-fi themed lyrics and discordant, complex musicianship that has set them apart from their contemporaries. The band's name, taken from a Slavic word for "warrior," reflects the relentless and exploratory nature of their music. Founding members Denis "Snake" Bélanger (vocals), Denis "Piggy" D'Amour (guitar), Jean-Yves "Blacky" Thériault (bass), and Michel "Away" Langevin (drums) created a unique style blending thrash's aggression with prog's complexity, which evolved with each successive release.
Despite line-up changes and the tragic loss of guitarist Piggy in 2005, Voivod has remained a beacon of innovation in the metal genre. They have a strong and dedicated fan base, which has allowed them to maintain their status as cult heroes within the metal community. Their more recent releases, including "Synchro Anarchy" and its deluxe edition, have continued to expand their catalog with fresh material, displaying the band's ability to evolve while still retaining the essential elements that make Voivod a revered name in metal. With songs like "Paranormalium" and reimagined versions of earlier tracks such as "Condemned to the Gallows (2023 Version)" and "Nuage Fractal (2023 Version)," Voivod demonstrates their unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of heavy music.
