Majority Rule was a seminal post-hardcore band hailing from Fairfax, Virginia. Their music, characterized by intense screams, intricate guitar work, and thunderous rhythms, stood at the forefront of the DIY punk and hardcore scenes in the late 90s and early 2000s. Formed in 1996, the trio—comprising vocalist and guitarist Matt Michel, bassist Kevin Lamiell, and drummer Pat Broderick—forged a sound that was both aggressive and contemplative, reflecting the angst and activism of their era. They quickly became known for their energetic live performances and staunchly independent ethos, distinguishing themselves within the hardcore community.
Majority Rule released several influential recordings, leaving a lasting impact on the genre. Their debut full-length "Interviews With David Frost" arrived in 2001 and put them on the map with its scorching critique of socio-political climates through a deeply personal lens. Their follow-up, "Emergency Numbers," dropped in 2002 and continued to push the boundaries of the hardcore sound with heavier and more complex compositions. Prior to these, the band had released "Document 12," a split with fellow Virginians Pg. 99 that showcased their ability to blend beauty with brutality. Voice of a new generation, their "4 Song Demo" circulated with much acclaim in the underground, cementing their status as a band with both vision and vehement delivery. Although Majority Rule disbanded in 2004, the spark of their music reignited in 2017 with reunion shows benefitting various progressive causes, illustrating the enduring nature of their work and dedication to the messages they championed.
