Geoffrey Dean

Dr. Geoffrey Dean is a jazz pianist, composer, author, and educator currently active in the Washington D.C. area. He has a diverse music background that spans multiple genres, including blues, hard bop, classical, R&B, and modern jazz. Dean completed his undergraduate studies at the Berklee College of Music, earned his Master's in Jazz Studies at the University of Tennessee, and received his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Jazz Performance from the University of Illinois. He is also a published author, having written an educational book on jazz harmony titled "Kenny Kirkland's Harmonic and Rhythmic Language: A Model For The Modern Jazz Pianist," and has contributed to Downbeat Magazine. Geoffrey Dean has performed and recorded with notable jazz musicians like Terell Stafford, Steve Turre, and Greg Tardy.

Recently, Dean released his album "Foundations," which features a quartet with bassist Harish Raghavan, Justin Copeland, and Eric Binder. The album showcases lesser-known hard bop compositions with a modern twist, recorded at the prestigious Bunker Studio in Brooklyn. His musical projects often blend different styles, but "Foundations" leans heavily on jazz traditions.
