Avenged Sevenfold, often known by their abbreviation A7X, is an American heavy metal band hailing from Huntington Beach, California, formed in 1999. The band has become known for their diverse rock sound, which features elements of heavy metal, hard rock, and progressive metal, often complemented by conceptual and narrative-driven lyrics. The group originally consisted of M. Shadows (vocals), Zacky Vengeance (rhythm guitar), The Rev (drums), and Matt Wendt (bass), with Synyster Gates (lead guitar) joining in 2001, and Johnny Christ (bass) coming onboard in 2002 to solidify the lineup. Although they suffered a tragic loss with the death of The Rev in 2009, they continued to forge ahead with new drummer Mike Portnoy for their fifth album and later, Arin Ilejay and Brooks Wackerman.
Over the years, Avenged Sevenfold has released a slate of popular albums and chart-topping singles, crafting a substantial fanbase with their ambitious compositions and theatrical flair. Albums like "City of Evil" and "Nightmare" propelled them to mainstream success, while "Hail to the King" and "The Stage" solidified their place in the annals of modern metal. With "The Stage," especially, they embraced a concept album structure, exploring themes of artificial intelligence and the future of humanity. The band's dedication to their craft has been evident with not just their music releases, but also with multimedia projects like the "Hail to the King: Deathbat" video game soundtrack. Their body of work includes live albums, such as "Live in the LBC," reissues with additional content like "Waking The Fallen: Resurrected," and EPs like "Black Reign" that showcase their continued evolution in sound and storytelling. Despite lineup changes and the evolving music landscape, Avenged Sevenfold remains a formidable presence in the rock and metal genres.
