Megafaun is an American indie folk band that was formed in 2007 in Durham, North Carolina, emerging from the ashes of the more experimental outfit DeYarmond Edison—which also included future Bon Iver frontman Justin Vernon. The band consists of brothers Brad and Phil Cook, who handle keyboards and guitar respectively, and Joe Westerlund on drums. Known for their rich harmonies, innovative use of improvisation, and blending of folk with elements of psychedelic rock and experimental sounds, Megafaun has carved out a unique space in the indie music landscape.
Their debut album “Bury the Square” (2008) set the tone for their avant-garde approach to American folk traditions, while their self-titled album “Megafaun” (2011), which is perhaps their most accessible work, continued to explore the boundaries of folk music, incorporating a tighter pop sensibility with their established experimental edge. Sandwiched between these two releases, “Gather, Form & Fly” (2009) and the extended play “Heretofore” (2010) showcased the trio’s multi-instrumental talents, as they seamlessly integrated a wide array of sounds and intricate arrangements into their organic musical flow. Largely considered critics' darlings, Megafaun has earned acclaim for their innovative work and have contributed to the wider appreciation of modern folk music and its intersections with other genres.
