Cosmic Sans is a psychedelic rock band from Missoula, Montana, carving out a unique sound that blends western psychedelia with folksy, alt-country roots. Led by songwriter and guitarist Jake Howell, the band—which also includes Seamus Jennings, Will Stoskopf, Lane Ulberg, and Cole Bronson—got its start in September 2019 and quickly gained a loyal local following by performing in venues ranging from historic ghost towns to music festivals. Their music is inspired by a rugged Montana landscape, both barren and beautiful, and mixes influences from punk, noise, tropicália, and classic rock, drawing comparisons to artists like Queens of the Stone Age, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Big Thief, Gram Parsons, and Wilco.
Their debut release was self-titled in fall 2021, and by 2023, Cosmic Sans had released their sophomore album, *Psychedelicatessen*, on Missoula’s Drag Bunt Records. This record marked a move toward more melodic and mature songwriting, while still embracing their characteristic eclectic experimentation. The band has toured the Pacific Northwest and had notable showcase appearances, such as at Boise’s Treefort Music Fest, solidifying their reputation as an emerging force in psych-rock.
