Marc-André Hamelin

Marc-André Hamelin is a Canadian virtuoso pianist and composer, renowned for his consummate technique and a deep affinity for a broad range of repertoire. Born in Montreal in 1961, Hamelin began his piano studies at the age of five, and his mastery of the instrument was evident early on. He obtained a bachelor's degree from the Vincent d’Indy School of Music and later studied at Temple University under the guidance of Harvey Wedeen and Russell Sherman. His international career was launched after he won the Carnegie Hall International Competition for American Music in 1985.

Throughout his illustrious career, Hamelin has received accolades for his exploration and advocacy of lesser-known works alongside the standard classical and romantic repertoire. His extensive discography encompasses an impressive variety of composers, including the likes of Alkan, Godowsky, and Roslavets, showcasing his passion for championing neglected masterpieces. In addition to his prowess in interpreting complex works by such esoteric composers, Hamelin is also celebrated for his performances of mainstream repertoire, as evidenced by his recordings of Fauré, Liszt, and Beethoven. As a performer, he is noted for his formidable technique, refined musicality, and the ability to elucidate the most intricate textures of each composition. Meanwhile, as a composer, Hamelin's contributions are respected for their inventiveness and integration of a wide palette of influences. His most recent releases affirm his ongoing dedication to both excellency in performance and the discovery and reinterpretation of composed works, continuously affirming his status as one of the leading musicians in the classical music world.
