Mahmoud Guinia

Mahmoud Guinia was a master of Gnawa music, a hypnotic, spiritual style that originated with descendants of enslaved people in Morocco. He was born in Essaouira, a coastal city known as a hub for Gnawa culture, and dedicated his life to preserving and sharing this rich musical tradition. Guinia's powerful vocals, combined with the mesmerizing rhythms of the guembri (a three-stringed bass lute) and the clashing metal qraqeb castanets, created a truly captivating experience. Sadly, Mahmoud Guinia passed away in 2015, leaving behind an incredible legacy.
