Nicola Rescigno was an American opera conductor and co-founder of the Dallas Opera, best known for his work with legendary soprano Maria Callas. Born in 1916 to an Italian musical family, Rescigno became a champion of bel canto repertoire and helped bring opera to new audiences through his dynamic conducting and knack for spotting talent. His partnership with Callas during the 1950s-60s produced iconic performances, including their fiery *Medea* collaborations and *La Traviata* recordings that still thrill opera fans today. A charismatic figure with a flair for drama both on and off the podium, Rescigno co-founded the Dallas Opera in 1957 and later worked extensively in Europe, leaving behind live recordings that crackle with the energy of mid-century opera at its most electrifying. He passed away in 2008, remembered as a bridge between old-world operatic traditions and modern American stages.
