Ulrich Krieger

Ulrich Krieger is a German-born composer, saxophonist, and experimental musician known for pushing the boundaries of sound through contemporary classical, electronic, and avant-garde music. With a deep background in both acoustic and electronic performance, Krieger is renowned for his innovative work with amplified saxophones, microtonality, and extended techniques. He has collaborated with a wide range of artists and ensembles, including Lou Reed, La Monte Young, and Merzbow, blending genres from noise and ambient to chamber and rock.

Krieger is also a professor at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), where he teaches composition and experimental sound practices. His solo work often explores sonic extremes, as evidenced in his recent "Aphotic" series — dense, immersive recordings inspired by the deep sea's mysterious, lightless zones. Whether interpreting 20th-century experimental pieces or creating intense, atmospheric soundscapes, Krieger continues to expand what’s possible in music through fearless exploration and cross-genre collaboration.
