Los Retros is the musical moniker of Mauri Tapia, a first-generation Mexican-American multi-instrumentalist from Oxnard, California. Tapia began experimenting with music at a young age, borrowing his older brother's guitar at eight and starting to release his own songs online by sixteen. He is heavily influenced by Central and South American soft-rock and alternative pop from the 1970s and 1980s, with his name paying homage to the Chilean pop group Los Ángeles Negros. Los Retros' music often features dreamy vocals and soothing bedroom pop tunes, blending Latin American tones with contemporary styles. Tapia's project was initially known as Retrospect but was renamed to stand out and avoid confusion with other artists.
Los Retros has released several notable EPs, including *Retrospect* (2019), *Everlasting* (2020), and *Looking Back* (2021). These releases reflect on life and love, incorporating influences from R&B to psychedelic rock. Los Retros gained recognition after the release of the single "Someone To Spend Time With" and has since toured the American West Coast. Despite often being perceived as a band, Los Retros is primarily a solo project, with Tapia playing most instruments himself. However, he has collaborated with other musicians, including his spouse Lupe on keyboards. Los Retros is now signed to Stones Throw Records, a label known for its eclectic roster of artists.
