Noel Coward

Sir Noël Peirce Coward (1899-1973) was a titan of 20th-century British theatre, renowned for his wit, flamboyance, and what Time magazine called “a sense of personal style, a combination of cheek and chic, pose and poise.” His contributions to the arts span from playwriting, acting, and directing to songwriting, singing, and a stint in film. Born in Teddington, a suburb of London, Coward was a child prodigy whose professional stage debut came at the young age of eleven.

Over the course of his prolific career, Coward authored more than 50 plays, composed hundreds of songs, and starred in numerous theatrical performances and films. His most notable works include the comedic play "Private Lives" and the songs "Mad About the Boy" and "London Pride," which capture the spirit of their time with their sharp lyrics and enduring melodies. While Coward's classics were composed decades ago, recent releases such as "Noël Coward: His Art" and "Noël Coward Sings 'Sail Away' and Other Coward Rarities (Recordings 1944-1961)" reflect the ongoing interest in and appreciation for his work. His persona, prolific output, and sophisticated style continue to influence and entertain audiences, offering a window into the glamour and societal complexities of his era.
