Australian Art Orchestra

The Australian Art Orchestra (AAO) is one of Australia’s leading contemporary music ensembles, known for pushing the boundaries of genre and cultural collaboration. Founded in 1994 by the late pianist and composer Paul Grabowsky, the AAO brings together improvisers, composers, and performers from diverse musical backgrounds. The group is celebrated for creating innovative works that seamlessly bridge jazz, classical, experimental, and traditional music practices, often collaborating with artists from Indigenous Australian and Asian music traditions.

Under the artistic direction of Peter Knight since 2013, the AAO has continued to evolve, experimenting with new forms and fostering deep cross-cultural dialogues. Their projects, such as Hand to Earth and Water Pushes Sand, reflect a strong commitment to cultural exchange and sonic exploration.
