Larry Ochs is a saxophonist and composer best known as a founding member of the influential Rova Saxophone Quartet, an avant-garde ensemble formed in San Francisco in the late 1970s. With a distinct voice on the tenor and sopranino saxophones, Ochs has carved out a prolific career in improvised and experimental music, collaborating with a wide range of forward-thinking musicians like Nels Cline, Gerald Cleaver, and Fred Frith. His work often explores the boundaries between composition and free improvisation.
In addition to his work with Rova, Ochs has led and participated in numerous groups and projects, including Larry Ochs Sax & Drumming Core, the Fictive Five, and Jones Jones. His discography reflects a deep engagement with sonic exploration and has been released on labels such as Clean Feed, RogueArt, and Not Two Records. Whether performing in intimate free jazz settings or larger ensemble works, Ochs continues to push the envelope of creative music.
