Tafelmusik Chamber Choir

Tafelmusik Chamber Choir is an integral part of Toronto's historically informed performance scene, revered for its versatility and excellence within the realm of baroque choral music. Established as a complement to the esteemed Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, the choir came into being in 1981 under the artistic direction of Ivars Taurins. It is renowned for its clarity, nuance, and brilliance in delivering choral masterpieces of the 17th and 18th centuries, though its repertoire gracefully extends beyond the baroque into classical and early romantic music. The ensemble features a selection of skilled vocalists, each a soloist in their own right, who come together to create a harmonious and balanced choral experience.

The choir has an impressive discography, having recorded extensively and gaining both critical and popular acclaim. Among their recent releases is "Gloria," which reflects the choir's finesse in interpreting sacred baroque compositions. Their live rendition of "Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125 'Choral'" showcases the powerful synergy between the choir and the orchestra, breathing new life into this monumental work. Another celebrated recent release is "Handel: Best of Messiah, HWV 56," where the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir displays their command of Handelian nuances, and their performance is marked with spirited energy, solidifying their reputation as a leading force in the interpretation of this beloved oratorio.
