Suchitra Mitra

Suchitra Mitra was a renowned Indian singer and composer, celebrated for her exceptional renditions of Rabindrasangeet, the songs of Rabindranath Tagore. Born on September 19, 1924, in Bihar, India, she began her musical journey in the early 1940s, studying at Sangeet Bhavana in Santiniketan under distinguished pedagogues like Indira Devi Chaudhurani and Santidev Ghosh. Mitra was not only a musical icon but also an active participant in the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA), where she used her music as a form of social activism during tumultuous times in India. She served as a Professor and Head of the Rabindra Sangeet Department at Rabindra Bharati University and was even appointed as the Sheriff of Kolkata in 2001. Suchitra Mitra passed away on January 3, 2011, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations of music lovers.
