Dave Valentin, born on April 29, 1952, in the Bronx, New York, was a multifaceted flutist who proudly fused elements of Latin music with smooth jazz, R&B, and pop to create a distinctive and vibrant sound. Learning percussion at an early age before taking up the flute at 12, Valentin's talent swiftly garnered attention, leading him to study at the High School of Music and Art and the prestigious Manhattan School of Music. His professional breakthrough came in the late 1970s when he caught the eye of jazz flautist Hubert Laws, who then introduced him to producer Dave Grusin, resulting in Valentin's first recording contract.
Over the years, Valentin became renowned for his technical proficiency, pioneering spirit, and his ability to infuse his music with warmth and gusto. His discography is wide-ranging, beginning with his debut album "Legends" in 1978, and later encompassing an enviable collection of works such as "Sunshower" and "Tropic Heat." He had a long-standing partnership with the GRP label, where he consistently delivered his Latin-infused jazz to a broad audience. Throughout his dynamic career, Valentin toured extensively, enchanting audiences globally, and became especially noted for his live performances, as captured in the celebrated "Live At The Blue Note." In 2003, he received a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album, a testament to his profound impact on the genre.
