King Jammy, also known as Prince Jammy, is a true legend in the world of reggae and dub music. Emerging from Jamaica in the 1970s, he quickly made a name for himself as a sound system engineer, working with the legendary King Tubby and mastering the art of dub mixing. He wasn't just an engineer though; Jammy's innovative production style, characterized by heavy basslines, creative use of effects, and a futuristic (for the time!) sound, helped to define the digital reggae era in the 1980s.
Jammy's productions launched the careers of many artists and his "Sleng Teng" riddim, created on a Casio MT-40 keyboard, is arguably the most influential riddim in reggae history, spawning countless versions and cementing his place as a pioneer. Beyond "Sleng Teng," he continued to produce hit after hit, shaping the sound of dancehall and solidifying his reputation as one of reggae's most important and innovative figures.
